Here is a secret that experienced Kenya travellers know: the best trip is never just a safari. It is a safari followed by a few days on the coast, toes in warm sand, watching the Indian Ocean turn from turquoise to gold at sunset. Bush and beach. It is the combination that makes a Kenya holiday truly complete.
We are based in Diani Beach, so we see this first-hand every week. Guests arrive from the Mara windswept and buzzing with stories about lions and wildebeest crossings, and within hours they are poolside with a fresh coconut, completely unwound. The contrast is what makes it work so well.
Why Safari Plus Beach Is the Most Popular Combo
A safari is exhilarating. Early mornings, bumpy roads, constant alertness, adrenaline when you spot a leopard in a tree. But it is also tiring. After three or four days in the bush, your body craves rest. That is where the coast comes in.
Kenya is one of the very few destinations in the world where you can see the Big Five and be on a white-sand tropical beach within the same trip — often on the same day, thanks to short domestic flights. This is not a two-country itinerary requiring international connections. It is one country, one trip, and the logistics are surprisingly easy.
Our data shows that over 60 percent of our guests who book a Maasai Mara safari also add beach days. The ones who do not almost always tell us afterwards that they wish they had.
How to Split Your Days
The right split depends on your priorities, but here are the two most popular options we recommend.
The Classic: 3 Days Mara + 3 Days Diani
This is our most booked combination and it works beautifully within a one-week holiday. Three nights in the Maasai Mara gives you two full days of game drives — enough to see the big cats, elephants, hippos, and with luck a river crossing during Migration season. Three nights in Diani gives you proper beach time: snorkelling, a dhow sunset cruise, a visit to Colobus Conservation, or simply doing nothing at all.
The Luxury Extended: 4 Days Mara + 3 Days Diani
If you have an extra day, put it in the Mara. Four nights gives you three full days of game drives, which significantly increases your chances of rare sightings. The fourth morning is often when guests see that cheetah hunt or leopard with a kill that they have been hoping for. Then fly to Diani for three nights of pure relaxation.
For longer trips, you can add a second safari destination. 3 nights Mara + 2 nights Amboseli + 3 nights Diani is an outstanding eight-night itinerary that gives you big cats in the Mara, Kilimanjaro elephants in Amboseli, and the Indian Ocean to finish.
Getting Between Safari and Beach
This is easier than most people expect.
By air: The fastest and most popular option. Daily flights operate from the Maasai Mara airstrips directly to Ukunda (Diani Beach's local airport). The flight takes about 90 minutes on a small Cessna Caravan and the views are spectacular — you fly over the Great Rift Valley and often spot wildlife from the air. Airlines like Safarilink and AirKenya run these routes multiple times daily.
Via Nairobi: If your Mara flight routes through Nairobi's Wilson Airport, you can connect to Ukunda the same day. Allow at least two hours for the connection.
By road: Driving from the Mara to Diani takes roughly eight to nine hours. We do not recommend this for most visitors, as the journey is long and the roads between Narok and the coast are not the most scenic. The flight is worth the cost.
We handle all internal transfers for our guests. You do not need to book flights separately — tell us your dates and we take care of the logistics.
Best Beach Destinations After Safari
Diani Beach
Our home base and our top recommendation. Diani consistently ranks among the best beaches in Africa, and it deserves it. The sand is white, the water is warm year-round, and the reef protects the shore so swimming is safe and calm. There are excellent hotels and resorts at every price point, from luxury all-inclusive to charming boutique guesthouses. Activities include snorkelling, diving on the reef, kite surfing, dhow cruises, and visiting the nearby Shimba Hills National Reserve for a half-day safari among coastal forest elephants.
Lamu Island
For travellers seeking something more cultural and off the beaten path. Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow car-free streets, Swahili architecture, and donkeys as the main form of transport. The beaches on neighbouring Manda and Shela are pristine and often deserted. Lamu is best reached by a short flight from Nairobi or Mombasa. It pairs beautifully with a safari for couples and honeymooners looking for romance and history.
Watamu
A smaller, quieter alternative to Diani, located north of Mombasa near Malindi. Watamu Marine National Park is one of the best snorkelling and diving spots in East Africa. The town has a laid-back, village feel. Bio-Ken Snake Farm and the Gede Ruins (a 13th-century Swahili settlement) are excellent half-day excursions. Watamu is ideal for travellers who want a beach experience with fewer tourists.

Budget Considerations
A combo trip is not necessarily more expensive than a safari-only trip of the same length. Here is why.
Safari lodges and conservancy fees are the most expensive part of any Kenya trip. A night in the Mara costs significantly more than a night at a Diani Beach hotel. By splitting your days between bush and beach, you actually bring down the average per-night cost of your holiday.
A three-night Mara stay plus three nights at a good Diani hotel typically costs less than six nights in the Mara — and you get a far more varied and restful experience.
The main additional cost is the internal flight from Mara to Diani, which runs approximately $150-250 USD per person one way depending on the season and how far in advance you book. We consider this money very well spent.
Best Time for a Combo Trip
The beauty of the bush-and-beach combination is that it works year-round, because Kenya's coast and interior have complementary weather patterns.
- July to October: Peak safari season (Migration in the Mara) and dry season on the coast. The best of both worlds, but also the most popular and expensive
- January to February: Excellent safari conditions (dry, great for big cats) and perfect beach weather. Slightly quieter than the July-October peak
- June: The sweet spot. Safari season is starting, the Mara is green and uncrowded, and Diani is entering its dry season. Mid-range pricing
- November to December: Short rains can affect safari roads but rarely ruin a trip. The coast gets brief afternoon showers. December picks up for the holiday season
The guests who do bush and beach always come back. The ones who only do safari talk about coming back for the beach. There is a lesson in that.
